Scott appoints Carmichael as Election Director

Tavish Scott, leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats has appointed Alistair Carmichael MP as the party's Elections Director.

Speaking at his party's conference in Bournemouth, Tavish Scott said:

"I have set out a clear direction for the Scottish Liberal Democrats. We will help people across Scotland with the massive cost of living rises they face. I want other parties to accept that more big government won't help pay the gas bill.

"So today, with that new direction in mind, I am appointing Alistair Carmichael to be the Scottish Liberal Democrat's Election Director. He takes immediate responsibility for the forthcoming European elections and the General Election.

"I am asking Alistair Carmichael to make helping people with their economic difficulties the core of the party's campaigning."

Alistair Carmichael added:

"Tavish Scott has set the party on a new political direction. The party must now step up to the mark. I am determined that the Scottish Liberal Democrats will take a major step forward in how we campaign and take our message out to the people of Scotland.

"The election of George Lyon to the European Parliament is my first campaign goal. This campaign will be different from previous European elections. I want Liberal Democrat campaigners to focus on why people will be better off electing a Liberal Democrat MEP rather than focusing on the virtues of EU membership.

"By the time Labour are eventually brave enough to call the General Election I want the Scottish Liberal Democrats to be their principle challenger right across Scotland.

"Our message will be clear: we understand the issues that face people in their daily lives and we can offer solutions which offer real help. My task is to make it happen."
