Commenting as the Health Secretary visits a critical care unit to report that the Patient Safety Programme has reduced hospital infections, Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP said:
"While it's encouraging that small changes like regular hand washing, have reduced hospital infections, major changes are also necessary to avoid more fatal outbreaks.
"That's why it's so important that the public inquiry into the fatal C. Diff outbreak at the Vale of Leven hospital also considers similar incidents across the country.
"The Scottish Government shied away from officially widening the scope of the inquiry. It's now up to Lord MacLean as chair to look at other serious outbreaks, like those in Grampian and Orkney, to make sure that the final report can make recommendations to help all Scotland's hospitals fight these killer bugs."
