Commenting ahead of talks set to resume tomorrow between the EU, Norway, and the Faroe Islands on mackerel fishing, Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesman Liam McArthur said:
"I am glad that talks with the Faroe Islands are set to resume and hope that a sensible deal can now be struck. It has long been felt that the Faroese were more anxious to reach a resolution and these latest negotiations appear to reinforce that fact.
"By contrast, the approach being adopted by Iceland seems as unreasonable and dangerous as ever. The EU now needs to look again at what sanctions it has at its disposal in order to bring Iceland back to the negotiating table. This crisis over mackerel stocks has gone on long enough and must now be brought to a close".
